getting the t-mobile router to keep time

I've got the TM branded Linksys WRTU54G-TM wireless
router - the one that includes SIM slots for the TM
"t-mobile at home" VOIP phone line.

Every so often it forgets the time, which then messes up
loggin functions and the caller-ID timestamps.

I've looked through the admin settings and can't find
any obvious ones to tell it to hook up to an NTP server
(or, for that matter, to manually enter in the time).

I did figure out a work-around, which involves resetting
the time zone. Once I do that the unit will reboot and
grab the time again. Which kills any connections for the
next few minutes.

But there's got to be some way to tell it do a periodic
time check of its own, right?

(And, for that matter, why does it lose the time in the
first place?)

Any suggestions for what I've overlooked? Thanks.

A number of houses destroyed in the targeting of Dr. Rayyan's house

GAZA, (PIC)-- On the sixth day of the Gaza holocaust, the number of
Palestinians killed by the Israeli occupation airforce has reached 420
and the number of wounded has reached 2100, 300 of them in serious
condition.
The worst carnage on Thursday was the targeting of the house of Dr.
Nizar al-Rayyan, a prominent Hamas leader, in which he and 15 members
of his family were killed. Dr. Rayyan's house as well as many houses
in the vicinity were destroyed.
The houses of two other Hamas activists were also targeted by the
Israeli occupation airforce, as well as the training grounds of the
Qassam Brigades, no casualties were reported.
Israeli occupation air strikes on Thursday targeted areas close to the
border from Beit Hanoun to the north, to Hay al-Tuffah and Jabalya to
the north east of the Strip, paving the way for a possible ground
assault.
Dr. Basem Naim, the Health Minister said that the death toll is
expected to rise because there are more than 300 serious cases, adding
that it is expected that many people are still buried under the
rubble.
He said there are severe shortages of medicines and materials
essential for treating the wounded.
He added that hospital stores ran out completely of 105 types of
medicines, 225 types of medical consumables and 93 types of laboratory
materials.
He also said that 50% of ambulances are not working because of the
lack of spare parts and stressed the dire need for electricity
generators, all because of the oppressive siege that preceded the
start of the holocaust.
He appealed to Egypt to allow medical teams waiting to enter the Gaza
Strip to pass through the Rafah border crossing.

CONFIRMED: CDMA roaming works in Japan.

I've just returned from a week in Japan, and brought my Verizon phone with
me to see if CDMA roaming now works in Japan as advertised.

CDMA roaming does work. Whoo-hoo!

However, it only works in Narita (international airport) and metropolitan
Tokyo. It did not work on the outskirts of Tokyo (e.g., Higashi Kurume),
nor in Yokohama or Kawasaki. One of my friends has KDDI au (Verizon's CDMA
roaming partner in Japan, pronounced as the letters "a u") and her phone
was showing a strong signal at the same time I got "No Service".

It's 1x, not EV-DO, which is strange since KDDI is a very competitive
company (#2 in Japan) and both #1 and #2 are 3G (UMTS).

Historically, KDDI used a variation of CDMA with different channel
assignments in the 850 band from other CDMA countries. KDDI recently
decided to play ball with the rest of the CDMA world (after intentionally
not playing ball for many years) but of course they have to support their
existing phones.

My surmise is that the towers in Tokyo and Narita operate in either mode,
but elsewhere the towers have not been upgraded yet. Some of KDDI's phones
operate in either mode as well.

Although CDMA roaming is cheaper, I would not recommend depending upon it
unless you are only going to be in Tokyo. When even major cities such as
Yokohama and Kawasaki are not yet online, the world-compatible CDMA
service in Japan should be considered embyronic.

UMTS (the 3G form of GSM; there is no 2G GSM in Japan) roaming with a
Verizon (actually, Vodafone NL assigned to Verizon) SIM card is available
in far more areas. It looks like Verizon prefers SoftBank, whereas AT&T
seems to go with either SoftBank or NTT DoCoMo.

So, I took my SIM out and put it in an unlocked UMTS phone to use when I
was outside Tokyo, then in Tokyo switched to CDMA. I have no idea what
would happen if both phones were online simultaneously, and didn't care to
try.

The BlackBerry Storm supposedly supports UMTS in the 2100 band that Japan
uses, so you ought to be able to use it seamlessly in either CDMA or
GSM/UMTS mode throughout Japan.

I have a Storm now, but at the time I was roaming with my Motorola Z6c
which yesterday after I had returned from Japan had a confrontation with
spilled fluid...and lost. Hence the Storm, and I'm not NE2 eligible so
had to pay full price...

Timothy Butler over at OFB did some sleuthing and found that AT&T is
downgrading its EDGE/2G service to the weaker 1900 MHz band. Their
response to those with newly-lousy service? Buy a new phone.

EDGE/2G was previously using the 850 MHz band, which compared to the new
1900 MHz offered superior coverage, especially indoors. The switch, as
confirmed by AT&T sources, is designed to boost the network's 3G
coverage, but that leaves many users of previously functioning phones,
including the original iPhone, with worse service, especially in rural
areas. An AT&T PR representative, as well as several customer service
reps, offered the same solution: buy a new 3G phone, at the customer's
expense.

So sorry you spent $650 on that first iPhone

I was just wondering if any of you
were interested in the to-be-released in '09
Blackberry "Niagara" as it's called.

So is this really a Verizon Blackberry Bold??
There's really nothing concrete on its data, yet...

I took the ATT Bold out for a spin, and I have to say
that for me at least, I thought it was easily the best
Blackberry I'd ever used. Storm felt cumbersome,
unresponsive, and not to mention the browser issues.

Bold is light!

After a few years of "roaming", AT&T finally bought Edge Wireless in Lake
County.

Now the AT&T Coverage map works for my house, showing almost what I
perceived from moving around the area.

But what happened to the excellent Verizon coverage page?
It used to have gradients of coverage, but now shows my entire mountainous
area as being the same level ... "digital". That would be an amazing radio
trick if they could pull it off.

They offer a "comparison" between carriers, which I thought would be really
convenient, but it is not a zoomable map, just a US overview. If it is
done to the same gradient level as my local coverage map, it's no wonder
that they can claim better coverage than the competitors.

antennasearch.com is rather tedious to use, but it looks like I have a
partially blocked view of Mt. St. Helena, at a 10 mile distance.
Everybody has antennas there.
I have a view that seems to be the AT&T(Edge) tower that I use, although I
can't confirm that it is not a blocked view, on Cobb Mountain, at 11
miles.

Can the towers really be that sparse? What is the typical range?

There doesn't seem to be any 3G coverage for me. It does show in some of
the former EDGE area, though, which is news to me. Just not close enough.
The little blue blocks are quite small, not associated with the cell towers
I was able to find.

My 2 year AT&T contract is about up, and I'm looking for my next device.
I think I like the Blackberry Bold, which has excellent pricing through my
company, pricing that isn't available in the stores.
