View Full Version : S-E T62u & DBA-10 Bluetooth adapter

I'm in Dallas - still TDMA. My T62u does not recognize my DBA-10 at all,
although I've heard from people in GSM markets who say they work. No one at
Cingular has been able to tell me whether I will be able to use the
Bluetooth adapter when our system switches to GSM.

Actually I don't understand why the network has any impact on my phone
communicating with a device physically connected to it, but then there are
many things I don't understand.

When GSM is activated will there be a software change in my GAIT phone that
will allow communication with the DBA-10? Or will something else change
that will enable it? Or am I just out of luck?

I have also heard that Cingular will not offer GPRS on their GAIT phones.
Can anyone verify that?

I have a T62u and have used GPRS. GPRS became available when GSM was
enaabled. You can tell what type of connection you have be enabling the
hidden menus. Type *777* and press call, then cancel the call. You will see
a T or G (or, if analog, nothing) appear next to the signal strength
indicator. While offline, you can press the volume control, and you will get
a display of certain settings. If it says GPRS not permitted, then you need
to call Cingular to have it enabled. Also, there are additional menus that
appear under Networks and Extras. Don't play with the debug feature.

I don't think Cingular will enable GPRS in a TDMA market (even on a
GAIT phone). Alan is that what they did for you?

If so, do you have CSD *and* GPRS?

Bob, SonyEricsson has told me that the "smartback" accessory will
*never * be available for T62u. I imagine that is what you're talking
about...

The first question is already answered in my original post. I believe that
CSD is also active, as the phone (via SIM) can automatically choose GSM for
data when GPRS is not available.

I don't expect to have GPRS until GSM is activated. Estimated date for
Dallas is September. I want to know whether the Bluetooth adapter I have
will work with my phone after that. It appears you didn't read my post
carefully.

I have Ericsson's DBA-10 which is a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the
bottom of the phone. S-E support has confirmed it is compatible with the
T62u. Smartback and DBA-10 are not the same thing.

Alan, can you be a little bit clearer? I'm asking if your Cingular
account is provisioned for both CSD (known by Cingular as Wireless
Internet, uses your minutes for data) as well as GPRS (known by Cingular
as Wireless Internet Express, HIGH SPEED, costs on a per MB basis).

I don't believe that question is answered anywhere in your posts. The
reason I'm asking is because I would like to get this on my account, as
I live in a Cingular TDMA area (where they have said they can't
provision my account for high speed data) but spend most of my time in
Cingular (or roaming partners') GSM areas.

Just because you have wireless data working when you are in a GSM area
does not mean you have GPRS. My Wireless Internet works just fine in
most GSM areas but it's the low speed "switched data" variety. Just
making sure you understand this.

Thanks.

Sorry, I didn't understand 100%. It may depend on the plan you buy. I use
the net rarely, so I am on a pay-as-you-go plan (no monthly fee, but $.06/kb
plus air time). This plan uses GPRS (9600) as the primary connection. An
indicator on the phone displays if the phone is in GPRS range (above the
signal bars). I beleive I have seen settings in the phone that indicate it
would switch over to TDMA if GPRS is not available. The protocol stack in
the hidden menu has various settings that indicate what priority should be
given to GPRS and TDMA. You can also disable SID/SOC, whatever they are.

I'm in New Orelans on TDMA and I have a DBA-10 on my T62u. It seems to
work fine. I use my palm to access the internet through it and I use a
bluetooth headphone. I have a bluetooth CF card for my notebook but have
not yet tried to use it, with the phone, I can sync my palm through it.
It works pretty well. I just followed the instructions that came with
the DBA-10 and it was recognized right away. You do need to turn the
phone on with the DBA-10 installed. After reading problems others had, I
was surprised that it worked so easily, at least for me.

The DBA-10 is a different device, but as far as its working with the T62u,
I'm just going on the basis of information from Ericsson support and another
user. It doesn't work with mine so far. That's the mystery I'm trying to
solve.

I didn't mean to sound rude; probably just got worked up watching the John
Navas/Chris(ct) battle. ;-)

That's encouraging. I'll forward this information to Cingular to see
whether they can figure out what's different about your situation and mine,
other than geography. There may be a software or firmware difference in the
phones. If they can tell me how to check that I will contact you via
e-mail. BTW, what phone setup did you use in your Palm (is it a
Tungsten-T?), since they don't list the T62u?
