The usual cause is syncing is over a slow serial connection. When I sync my
Ericsson T39 over a fast IR connection, or Sony Ericsson P800 over a fast IR
or USB connection, syncing is pretty fast.

I beamed my phonebook to my T616 via the IR port on my palm when I first got
the phone and transferred the entire phonebook in seconds

There's a difference between beeming the phone book and syncing the phone
with a contact/calendar program like Outlook.

It take me about 10 minutes to sync my Nokia 6800 to Outlook via a data
cable. The time isn't in the transferring but in the Nokia PCsuite figuring
out what needs to be sent to the phone and/or to the PC.
