And how exactly does that work, or is it like those cell phone reception

I can't see how a piece of cardboard between the phone and the battery
magically recovers the batteries.

If you look real close to the cardboard, you will see that they're lil elf's
running in very small round cages, that spin as they run. These cages are
connected to nano generators, which produce the needed DC. Infact, the old
battery is just used to hold the "Elfin Magic Plate" in place.
