View Full Version : Mysterious envelop icon on Sanyo 8100

For a few days now, I have had this "envelope with a letter" icon at
the top of my phone and I can't get rid of it. I am pretty sure I
have no unread email nor SMS text message, so I am at a loss figuring
out what this icon means. I did look through the 200+ page user's
manual, but I didn't find a single place where all the icons are
explained.

If you want to know exactly what this icon is, it is located on the
top line, right of the two download/upload arrows and to see it,
select "Messaging" from the main menu: the icon is the one at the
left of the word "Messaging" (above "Share picture", "Short Mail",
etc...).

Is my phone cursed?

This is normal when you have an e-mail or shortmail message that is not
read. You need to go through your folders on the phone and make sure
that they are all marked read. I forget exactly where to look first,
but I always read mine right away so that I don't get this problem.
The wife though..... It took me the better part of a half hour to go
through her entire phone to find the one (yes it was only one) stinking
e-mail that she had viewed, just not marked read. That did the trick
and solved the problem. This is a problem that many experience and it
is due to something not being viewed on the handset (phone) and not
your online accounts. Hope this helps and happy hunting. Also if you
go to the service menu and go to phone info and then help, it gives the
icons and their functions (this one is not there so it still wouldn't
have helped, but in the future this may prove helpful at sometime).

I don't understand what you are trying to say. The icon on his
screen is a notification that he has some sort of message. The message
might be a e-mail, short mail, or text message.

Man, this post sums up my 8100 frustrations right now.

I've had this "icon" for 2 days no that will not go away. I've
certainly checked every type of every possible message I have, and even
deleted them. I've rebooted my phone. Everything. Still the Text
Message icon will not go away.

And I also hate that when you hit "View" to a new message, it does not
go straight to that message. Any way to do that?

Call and leave yourself a message from a landline. Then check your
voicemail and delete the message. Wait for the "there are no new messages"
and then hang up. It will go away. The trouble you indicate happens when
you hang up before the phone receives the "no messages" signal.

I've heard that this is not a user-fixable problem, but a "known issue"
at Sprint.

yeah, after I delete the last message in my box, I always watch the
screen and wait for the icon to go away before I hang up....but this
won't solve his problem if he had a text message indicator stuck on.

Sprint must have recieved enough calls on it though. They had Samsung
build in an actual menu item to clear the voicemail indicator off the
screen.

Doing a phone reset might help if the problem isn't with sprint. I need
to use the clear icon button to clear it the first time I got my n400s
and a500. after I listened to and cleared the icon it never happened on
that phone again.

Sanyo also had an option to clear the call count or something like that.
Just go to Voice Mail and then Clear Count in your menu system but
if you want to avoid that in the future, just make sure the New Mail
indicator goes off before you hand up the phone when checking voice
mail.
