I remember seeing a few years back in an article about a bombing in
Israel there was a picture of a police officer, and on his hip appeared
to be a i1000. Anyone know if they offer it internationally?

Nextel, however, has iDEN roaming in Israel if that is your question:

That's true, but there is iDEN in Israel. Israel implements not only GSM,
but also iDEN. They used to also have American style TDMA, but I think that
company went to GSM. If you have international roaming active, you can use
a Nextel iDEN phone in Israel.

Rather than go back and forth ............................

I emailed AMIGO and they confirm the i2000+ is the only phone currently supported
on their system. They did indicate they plan to support other phones but their
roll out is 1 yr. behind the USA. The also shared some other interesting info.
AMPAL is a 25%-33 % owner of AMIGO. Some of AMPAL's historical SEC filings
indicte they were planing on implementing international roaming as late as 2002.
Also it Looks like they are having some regulatory issues in their country also
concerning tariffs. Just an FYI-

I here you, but am completely confused.

Here is a link to a Motorola site stating that Amigo is IDEN:

http://idenphones.motorola.com/iden/international/where_to_buy.jsp?country=us#

Here is GSM World's list on Israel:

http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_il.shtml

Note the absence of MIRS/Amgio.

Here is a link on the Amigo page which shows their phones:

http://www.amigo.co.il/html/amigo_frame.asp?opened=About&page=why_amigo.html

Note the presence of the i90, i95, i30sx, etc. These are not GSM phones.
They are the same models sold by Nextel.

I don't doubt you, but am completely perplexed. Perhaps, some additonal
logic is necessary for roaming
on the Amigo which isn't available on the other phones. It doesn't really
seem to make a great deal of sense, since Nextel phones can clearly roam on
the Mike network in Canada which is not affiliated with Nextel, but then
again, the US and Canada are so interconnected, that Nextel might have given
Mike special access to its databases.

It has nothing to do with compatibility. I think it is more a database issue but
I'm just guessing, the rep did not say why THEY did not support them.

A lot of things don't make sense at nextel. I was just passing on the info.

It's called VLR Visitor Location Register-units are tracked via fixed geographic
Interconnect Location Areas (ILAs).These areas are defined by the system
operator based on the coverage area of theEBTS sites. Location data is stored
in the VLR. These records contain current information like most recent location
area and the feature provisioning table. The VLR is always integrated with the
MSC and the VLR accesses the HLR to downloadsubscriber information as
MSs move into the VLRs coverage area.
