i've also posted this on hofo... sorry if it's a repeat for some of you!
anyway... could someone please explain the local freedom plans in a
little more detail than the website? i've called customer service a few
times and have received conflicting information. the website explains
that there are no long distance or roaming charges in your coverage
area, but does not list the ld and roaming rates outside the coverage
area. when i've called, i've had a few reps tell me that ld is now
included. one said that ld is included if you pay the extra $10 for the
free to roam minutes. others have said that ld is $0.15 or $0.25. any
help is greatly appreciated!

yes that does help... i'm looking at a newspaper ad right now
advertising the plan ($39.95, 700 anytime, unlimited nights and
weekends,) and it says it also includes 1,000 mobile to mobile minutes.
Do these mobile to mobile minutes come with all local plans $39.95 and
above? And does anyone know if this is the same in all of ALLTEL's
markets?

I think there are a few exceptions. In Kansas, Alltel phones roam in
Wichita and Topeka/Lawrence/Kansas City areas on Verizon at $0.59/min on
Local Freedom plans. The rest of the state is great though.

deal with an agent over the corporate store? are you mad?

only someone who was an agent himself would suggest such a thing.. if
you sign up with alltel service through an agent you will automatically
be charged an activation fee, as well as possibly a "dealer fee". when
you run into a problem with your service they'll send you around the
corner to the corporate store or the 1-800#.

as far as the problems with the 1-800#, i call them several times a day
for various things (financial, tech support, etc). i have heard all of
the stories about how long they have to wait and how mean the reps are
and all of it. with my frequency of calling you'd think id run into said
problems.. i really dont. ive run into wait problems but they never
exceeded 25 minutes on hold (at the time i believe our tampa call center
was 100+ reps short) and i do NOT have a direct number to call.

in my experiences with dealers they are typically very poorly trained
and paid on a straight commission system.. pair that with them not
needing to clean up their own mess, its dangerous for customers. here
are a few delicious stories..

i had a customer come into the store with two tdma phones activated on
total freedom wondering why they werent working too well. he ultimately
ended up cancelling despite my best efforts to correct it.

i had a customer come in with a phone that would not ring. it was bought
the previous day from a dealer, it was simple.. a busted speaker DOA..
they wouldnt take it back, made him come to our store. i gave him a new
one but later found out this was against policy.

the stories are endless, used phones being passed off as new, incorrect
handset programming, incorrect billing system setup leading to high
bills.

off my soap box.
